Canadian tax brackets without the bracket myth

Understand progressive brackets, credits, deductions and provincial differences.

Only the next slice enters the next bracket

Crossing a bracket threshold does not apply the higher rate to every dollar. This tool sums the tax on each slice, then applies the basic credits included in its method. The displayed average income-tax rate divides estimated income tax by gross employment income.

Credits and deductions do different work

A deduction reduces income used in a tax calculation. A non-refundable credit reduces calculated tax, usually with a floor of zero. Enhanced CPP contributions receive deduction treatment while base CPP contributions receive credit treatment in this employment model.

Know what is outside the estimate

Refundable credits, income-tested benefits, dependants, disability, age and pension credits, donations, tuition, investment income, self-employment, cross-border income and part-year residence are outside this employment worksheet. Quebec drug-insurance premiums and some final-return provincial reductions are also excluded.
