Start with the pay period

Your salary is an annual amount; a deposit covers a specific period. Biweekly means 26 regular payments, while twice monthly means 24. Some calendars contain an extra pay date. Compare the same period and check whether vacation pay, overtime or a bonus is included.

Follow the deductions

Federal and provincial income tax are separate from CPP or QPP and EI. Quebec also has QPIP. Employer pension, insurance, union dues, garnishments and voluntary extra withholding can change a deposit; this worksheet does not infer them.

Check the year to date

CPP and EI have annual limits, so deductions can stop partway through a year. Dividing the annual estimate by 26 is an average, not a prediction of every pay slip. Use the official payroll tools with the correct year-to-date amounts for a specific payment.
