An RRSP deduction changes tax; a contribution also uses cash

See the estimated tax difference separately from spendable money and verify your own deduction limit.

Use the limit on your notice

An annual maximum is not your available RRSP deduction room. Carryforward amounts, pension adjustments, earned income and prior contributions matter. Use your CRA notice of assessment or account information before contributing or claiming a deduction.

Separate tax from cash

The worksheet reduces taxable income by the deduction you enter. It also shows employment net income before an RRSP cash contribution and cash remaining if you contribute that same amount. A deduction for an earlier contribution need not be a new cash outflow.

A difference is not a promised refund

The tax difference compares two estimates. Your refund depends on withholding, instalments, other income and the complete return. RRSP withdrawals are generally taxable; the worksheet does not value future withdrawal taxes, benefits or investment performance.
